Melbourne Mech Workshop
This is a plastic modelling workshop, held in Oakleigh, normally first saturday, of each month with the express purpose of gathering and building a community of robot modellers in Melbourne. Currently, we hold sessions at 10 Atherton Road, Oakleigh 3166 (a block and a half from Oakleigh Railway Station) once a month.
The schedule is normally the first saturday of the month except when during Model Expo or the Australian BAKUC.
Check out the Gundam Australia Forums or the Manifest Forums thread for Mecha Workshop for more up-to-date schedules.

Why have a Mech Workshop?
The sad thing about most Japanese Anime-related robot model kits is that nobody ever takes them seriously in the modelling world. On the one hand you have talented modellers who work on topics like civil aircraft, trains, miniature wargaming, and military model kits that generally disdain sci-fi robot kits. On the other hand most buyers and collectors of these robot kits are generally not knowledgable about them and assume they're just toys to slap together and play with. Neither side ever seems able to communicate with each other. It's almost like the gap between Baby Boomers (Most traditional modellers) and Gen Y (most Mech modellers). Not surprising that very few people choose mecha as their modelling focus! The Mech Workshop exists to give new modellers a head start when their chosen field of interest is robots and other types of mechanical models (yes, this includes non-anime mechs like the AT-ATs in Star Wars). Also, I am fully aware that "Mecha" as used by Japanese generally applies to any machinery (cars, tanks, even mobile phones), but for purposes of the Mech Workshop, we're referring to robots and robot-like models. At the moment we are a small core group, but wish to expand on our membership and build a better awareness of mecha modelling as a legitimate subset of the Sci-Fi modelmaking hobby. |
